The kick-off of each season begins with an 'Interest Meeting' held at the school. It is open to all students and parents and provides a casual setting where the coaches will introduce the staff and explain everything about ACA Mountain Bike racing and what to expect throughout the season. It is also a perfect opportunity for you to ask questions or voice concerns.
The meeting takes place around late September or early October and held at Oxford High School.
The meeting for the 2024-25 season will take place at 6:00pm on Thursday, September 19th in the Athletic Facility Team Meeting Room.
Our coaches consist of Daniel Hagan (Head Coach) and Kanda Floyd (Team Director). Coach Daniel has many years of biking experience and coaching at the high school level. Coach Kanda handles all of the team coordination and keeps everything running smoothly. Both are very dedicated to the kids and enjoy helping them excel in the sport.
Other coaches include many dedicated volunteers (mostly parents of the athletes) that all go through proper ACA training and provide much needed support whether on the trails or at the race venues.
Your student will always be in good hands and have the support of people who, not only have the kids' best intertest in mind, but also share the passion of Mountain Biking.
All parents have the option to become an assistant coach. It's a great way to help the team and spend time with you child during practice. As with our kids, all skill levels are welcome for our caching staff.
Generally, practices during the week are held on Tuesday and Thursday. During the early part of the season, these will be held on school grounds with most of the concentration being general bike skills in addition to getting to know the students' current abilities.
As the season progresses (and the days get longer) the practices will transition to the local trails and catering the training to the individual levels of each child.
For the weekends, our practices will be held on Saturday morning at one of the trails. Typically, this will be either at Coldwater or McClellan (both within 15-minutes of Oxford), but as racing season gets closer, we will venture out to other venues to gain experience at the other locations where the races will be held.
There will be six scheduled race weekends that begin in February and end the first week of May. These will be 2-day events with Middle School racing on Saturday and High School racing on Sunday. Even though racing is done on different days, everyone attends both days for the support and comradery of the whole team.
It is a large gathering of kids and their families and promises to be an exciting time for all involved.
We, as a team, are a close-knit group. We encourage everyone to be involved and always enjoy the attendance of each student's parents, grandparents, and siblings at the races. The support you give means so much to the kids and the coaching staff really enjoys making new friends in the process.
We can never have too much help and we always encourage parents to join our team as a coach. Mountain Biking is the only High School sport where the parents can join and ride at every practice with their child. It's a wonderful opportunity for you to join your kid doing something that they love and encourage a healthy family activity that will last a lifetime.
Put a bunch of kids together with the same passion for biking and there is bound to be chemistry. Being on the Mountain Biking team almost guarantees that your child will make friendships that will last well past graduation. The desire to get out on the trail will keep these special bonds strong even throughout their adult life.
